|Doherty's New Drug Arrest
Updated: 14:01, Friday April 21, 2006
Rock star Pete Doherty has been bailed by police after being arrested again on drugs offences.
The 27-year-old Babyshambles frontman was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of possessing class A drugs with intent to supply and held in custody overnight.
Looking dishevelled, the singer left a police station in east London accompanied by his solicitor.
As he walked down the road, he told waiting reporters: "I feel like smacking you in the face, mate, stay away from me."
A Scotland Yard spokesman said he had been released on bail until a date in June pending further inquiries.
He was arrested after police stopped a car in east London. The 21-year-old driver of the car, who was also arrested, was released on bail to a date in May pending further inquiries.
The arrest came just hours after Doherty was spared jail by magistrates for possessing controlled drugs.
He had looked relieved as he was told he would not be going to prison after admitting seven counts of possessing controlled drugs.
District Judge Jane McIvor instead sentenced him to a community order with two years' supervision and 18 months' drug rehabilitation. He was also banned from driving for six months.
Doherty gained fame with The Libertines, but after being thrown out of the band for failing to get his drug addiction under control, he formed new band Babyshambles.
Last month, Doherty pleaded guilty to possession of a number of drugs, including heroin, cocaine and cannabis.
The charges related to occasions when he was stopped by police in east London on December 18 last year and on January 14 this year.
