Our college hasn't very long moved out of the dark ages. They were still using Win 3.1 about 3 or 4 years ago in some of the blocks. The comeputers were old desktop (not towers) ones with not much meg and the monitors wouldn't go no higher than 256 colours or was that 16. Anyway they were so obsolete, that they couldn't even be upgraded to 95.

Hmm... way to show my age here... Tire la langue don't really know if this counts as the thing we all call "The Internet", but I used to connect to Prodigy as early as 1990. This was back even before Windows 3.1 when it was a program that you ran in DOS. I remember my mom (and we all, for that matter) thought it was so incredible that you could play games with other users over the phone. I would also connect to different BBSs to use message boards and download games. I ran up such a huge phone bill once while downloading a 5-MB game and got chewed out by my folks. Rire

I didn't really do anything online between 1994 and '98-ish, but from 1998 to 2001 I would use our county library's Internet access at least once a week to check e-mail and sometimes work on my first Angelfire page.

In 2001 we got dial-up access at home, but that was also when I went off to college, so I had high-speed Ethernet access in the dorm and all university buildings. My parents got high-speed access in 2003 and haven't gone back to dial-up since. After I moved out of the dorm, I've paid for high-speed internet wherever I've lived (either DSL or cable).

I still can't believe many places expect people to settle with dial-up access. It does get the job done, but VERRRRY slowly. Tire la langue

My friend is in France right now using a 28kb connection! Rire
She isn't even trying anything other than e-mail.

Yay!! Another pioneer!! I'm not alone anymore!!! Très content

Sarah, out of curiosity, where did you use that Prodigy thing? I mean, it's funny because that's the name of the Internet access service offered by our local telephone company (Telmex / Mexico). It offers both dial-up (my connection... *cough, cough* XD ) and broadband (not bad; I'm seriously considering upgrading)

... Anyway, I do remember using Prodigy here in Mexico in, say, 1995 or so. Before that, I used that blasted AOL dial-up service (shudders), or dial-up connections by local ISPs.

Toledo, OH area.

Here's what the login screen looked like.

Yup, Wikipedia just plain rocks. I feel so nostalgic now haha.

Looks like a service provider of sorts. Not really Internet, but probably a way to access bulletin boards and download files, play online games, and perhaps have an early (and I mean VERY early Tire la langue ) chat program; is that correct, Star?

You mean Sarah? Sourire

Yup, that's exactly right. Prodigy had "jumpwords" to get to the different games and other areas, which were kind of the predecessor to AOL's Keywords.
