I was just on on one website for the last 15 minutes reading an article on something, and everything was fine until I clicked to go to the next page.

Then, all of a sudden, here comes the Windows Chime sound!

I literally sat here for at least three minutes trying to figure out where that sound was coming from. I kept thinking "But I'm on a Mac! So why am I hearing Windows sounds when I don't even have Windows on this machine?"

Turns out it was coming from a banner ad at the top of the page! Fou The ad said "You are the 10,000,000 visitor! Click here to claim your prize!"

Riiight. Like I'm going to give you all of my personal information!

Anyway, it was so bad I actually had to just mute the sound on my computer until I got done reading.

Banner ads that make noise are just as annoying as the pop-ups that come up on certain sites that take up the WHOLE SCREEN, the bumpers that come on during TV shows that take up a good portion of the screen and make noise as well, or the news ticker that runs along the bottom of your TV screen when you're watching the local news or even something like CNN.

Am I the only person that this kind of stuff bothers?

I had a banner ad come up a couple of days ago that said "You are the 1,000,000th visitor to this website! Click here to claim your free iMac!" and the same day I got a spam e-mail telling me I'd won a MacBook Pro and brand new iPhone. I thought "Geez, now I can have two iMacs, a MacBook and an iPhone! How did they know of my love of Apple products?" Of course I know better, though. Nobody just "gives" you an iMac, MacBook and iPhone, unless maybe they're your rich uncle Bob or something like that. To the providers of the sites, their passions are completely different. What they want is just to increase their earnings and earn cash as much as possible. So it is also affordable and easy to understand that they allow the ads put with the content.
