Thousands Down The Pan
Updated: 14:57, Friday April 21, 2006

A German pensioner flushed a fortune in banknotes down the toilet - because he mistakenly thought they were worthless.

The man had thousands of deutschmarks which he thought he could no longer change into euros.

Police in the northern German city of Kiel said the man decided to get rid of the notes by flushing them down the toilet.

He disposed of the 60,000 deutschmarks unaware they could still be exchanged for 30,000 euros - worth about 20,000.

Euros had become the official national currency in 2002.

Sewage workers recovered about half the sodden currency from the 64-year-old's plumbing.

The remaining notes created a bottleneck in local sewers, where most were fished out.

Police spokesman Uwe Voigt said: "He flushed the cash down the loo because he didn't think it was worth anything."

Mr Voigt said the pensioner, who lived in "spartan" circumstances had dried out the money and taken it to a local bank.

He added: "There may have been more cash that got away."

Since the value of a euro compared to dollar is $1.28 with the euro as the stronger currency, the value of the money stolen was in US dollars was about $38,400.

With the British pound which is also stronger against the dollar, is $37,400.

The Euro used to be almost equal to the US dollar, but the is more strong now.
It was good for us when we went on holiday, as the dollar was very weak a few years ago and we almost got 1=$2. Things are way cheaper in the US, so we bought loads of stuff Fier

60,000 dem = 30,677.51 eur, 20,970.38 gbp, or $39,650.91 usd. Would have been a tidy sum.

YA I got a purse for just under 10 U.S. dollars and here it would have been like $50 U.S. dollars my friend said. It was so cool. Even the clothes were so cheap but none would fit me because those people are so small Rire
