Open it up and take the ball out. Blow any dust you can out of it and then take a pen cap or something and scrape built-up grunge off the "rollers" that the ball makes contact with.

Another fix is get a laser mouse! Tire la langue

I was bored in my Admin class a few weeks ago and I started to play with the mouse ball. I unscrewed the bottom and could not (no matter how hard I tried) get it back on. I managed to get it to hold in place but a slight shake and the ball would fall on the desk. It was in that state for days until I guess someone fixed it for me! Fier

it's not so much a matter of how expensive it is. could i fork out the money to afford it? probably (i'm not really sure how much they run though) but i really just can't spend money on anything at the moment unless i REALLY need it. it might make life more convenient, but i really don't need it and i should save money for things i'm gonna have to pay for. once i get a job and get more comfortable money-wise then maybe getting one will be more reasonable. even still i'm just the kind of person who only buys something if can't live without. if i can come up with a logical reason for not getting something, then i probably won't. maybe that makes me a cheap skate, or maybe i guess i just don't use half the stuff i buy anyway so i figure why buy stuff. anyway, that's enough yammering for now.[/quote]

You can use a cutter or a sharp blade to gently (keyword, gently ) peel off the crust off the white plastic rollers. Then you just need to spray a little compressed air to get the stuff out of the mouse. This method has two advantages, IMO: 1) It's really fast, and 2) You don't risk misaligning or damaging the sensors with a q-tip; besides, you don't have to use alcohol or any other liquid cleaner, thus you don't risk smudging the sensors with it. Works great for me. Bravo

... Besides, it's always fun making a vivisection of a poor little computer mouse from time to time... Surpris

My old classic, one day at my computer course one tutor was talking to us about the subject. I got carried away and started cleaning the one I was using. I believe he said something like I could clean the rest of the mouses. My dad use to clean his with medical alcohol. I use to clean mine with my finger nail. Eventually I got so sick of cleaning the rollers (always the same stupid one) that I forked out and got an optical mouse. I also discovered that my mouse mat had something to do with my mouse constantly getting dirty. I had almost constant problems playing the XP Bowling, which for some reason one or two of the rollers kept coming away from the holder, so I had to get another mouse.
