The best games of 2012, were rewarded during the Game Developers Choice Awards 2013 which happened on March 27. Journey, the indie gaming title developed by Thatgamecompany bagged a total of six awards, including Game of the Year and the innovation award. The other honors received, include best audio, game design, visual arts and best download.

Jenova Chen, designer and thatgamecompany co-founder said "I really think the success of Journey is because we're standing on the shoulder of the giants,"

The game which released for PlayStation 3 last year, was rather, an unusual one. Journey has you controlling a mysterious robed figure in a vast dessert with distant mountains. Other players appear online in the game, but you cannot communicate with them via speech or text.

Besides Journey, the stealth action-adventure Dishonored from Arkane Studios won on the first ever Audience Choice Award (chosen by online votes), The Walking Dead by Telltale Games interactive, which is based on the TV series won the best narrative, Ubisoft's first person shooter Far Cry 3 won best technology, FTL: Faster Than Light, real time strategy game by Subset Games won Best Debut and Best Handheld/Mobile Game went to Fireproof Studio's puzzler, The Room .

Game designers Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, best known for there works with Baldur's Gate, Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect were honored with the lifetime achievement award.

Steve Russell the acclaimed developer of Spacewar was honored with the pioneer award. Spacewar is considered as one of the first digital games to be ever developed.

Chris Melissinos, creator of the Smithsonian American Art Museum's "The Art of Video Games" exhibit, was given the ambassador award.
