'Sixth Sense' star faces jail time

Thursday, August 17, 2006; Posted: 8:21 p.m. EDT (00:21 GMT)

GLENDALE, California (AP) -- Teen actor Haley Joel Osment, who suffered a broken rib last month when his car struck a mailbox, faces up to six months in jail on charges of driving drunk and possessing marijuana, authorities said.

The 18-year-old actor was charged Thursday with misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence, marijuana possession and driving under the influence with the special allegation of having a blood-alcohol content of .15 percent or higher. He also faces a vehicle code infraction of being under the age of 21 and driving with a blood-alcohol level of .05 or greater.

Osment's blood-alcohol level after the July 20 crash was measured at .16, twice the legal limit, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Osment was scheduled to be arraigned September 19 in Glendale Superior Court.

His attorney will work with authorities to arrange a time for the star of such films as "The Sixth Sense" and "Pay It Forward" to surrender, Robison said. The district attorney plans to request that bail be set at $15,000.

DreamWorks spokesman and family friend Marvin Levy was out of his office Thursday and did not immediately return a call for comment. He said Wednesday that Osment has recovered from his injuries and is preparing to attend college in the fall.

The actor recently finished work on the film "Home of the Giants."

"He's fine. The injuries were slight, not serious," Levy said.

Authorities said Osment was driving home alone about 1 a.m. when his 1995 Saturn hit a mailbox and flipped over.

This guy sounds like Homer Simpson. Hitting a MAILBOX and flipping over? (The speeding and drunkness contribute, now all he has to do is go bald and get fat)

You're thinking of the time Homer was driving during a fog with his head out of the window, getting his head hit by mailboxs.

This won't help him promote the new movie he is in next year (esp if he goes to prison!).

I didn't think it was a particularly great idea to mix the two either. So I guess that does also explain your thoery!

I had a great aunt, who was on medication for a condition and would drink Guinness. I lost count of the times we got a phone call from the hospital.

i dunno, i just don't see how a mailbox can flip a car over, no matter how fast he's driving. i would think the mailbox would get knocked over, not the car. unless it was like a big mailbox or something.

Note that he was driving a '95 Saturn. He hasn't necessarily had the best of times lately.

And didn't say, interestingly enough, what kind of mail box. A public outgoing (pillar) box of proper size can do a bit of damage if you run into it; less likely the case with RFD style (personal incoming) curb boxes, unless they're really elaborate with bricks and such.

I hope he gets the help he needs.

If they're anything like our post boxes, then it probably would have done some damage like as such.
