Posted Nov '05, this discussion segued from how AGU! eps sometimes don't properly end ("Izzy or Isn't He?" I'm looking in your direction), to how Susie throwing away Sophie 's speech on the evils of beauty pageants led to one of the best Susie moments on the show (yes, even better than her various times singing).

SpiderBraids:

I saw this thread on Luke's board, and it raises an interesting question: are KC any good at knowing to properly END a story, on All Grown Up! at least?

Dilweird raises his point, by giving us examples of lack of closure in some AGU! eps. I've retained all bad spelling, but no smilies.

KC seems to love to put us on the Twinlight zone:

Bad Kimi: So, the gang was arrested? how did they fix the misunderstanding?

Theif Encounter: Did Tommy pass the test?

Tommy Foolery: Do aliens really exist? Dil's team won the competition?

Izzy, isn't he? so Izzy was real after all?

Blindman's Bluff Didi caught Tommy and Dil after all?

Yu-Gotta-Go: was Chuckie able to put the YGG game in the past after all? what did he do the th dragon card?

Wouldn't it be nice?: What happened to the gang once they confessed everything to the police.

Dilweird also forgot one main unresolved issue of the Izzy ep: The election.

So, your turn.

chuckangie:

Sounds like thos episodes had fairly decent endings. Just open ended endings.

Remember in that Rugrats episode where they tried to get rid of that creepy clown toy Mr. Fiend. At the end of the episode it had "END?" with a question mark. That still qualifies as a closure BUT sets itself up for potential continuation.

KC just doesn't pull it off as good as others.

Kennan and Kell had the best open ended episodes on Nick IMO. They always end the episode where the characters hang at the brink of being screwed just as the curtain closes and the audiance claps.

Kids Next Door is also very good at it where the villains at the end of the episode ocasionally find victory in their defeat, laughing as the screen fades out.

Its just a style thing.

Having watched about every episode of KND up to SNOWING, the only eps that are anything like that are ARCHIVE (teacher gives Nigel F, secretly calls Father) and HOUND (another teacher reveals herself to be a werewolf, like the main villain of that ep). I digress tho...

I kinda think that Dilweird's choice of "we didn't see Dil compete in the final" is not a good one, b/c we didn't see Dil compete at all. Note to K-C... a laser tag ep would make a good Dil ep.

Although not as blatantly unclosed as the previous selections, if Norm wanted to have Susie being selected to sing at a car race, you'd better have a subsequent ep where she does this, otherwise it makes the ending look like a cheap joke. (Didn't you say something about this being among the best uses of Susie's singing talent, esp. that she didn't even have to sing?)

chuckangie:

Yes it was the best momment ever for Susie: the plot device singing girl. And if you actually showed her singing in that same ep then that would completely defeat the impact of the joke. Her vanity about singing was in focus and not her actual talent at singing.

An ep may be done as a follow up about it or not. But either way it was concluded.

Anyway, theres a difference between open endings and loose endings. Open endings are done intentionally for the sake of style while loose endings result from sloppy/uninspired writting.

For AGU, they are mostly open endings... just corny-ly executed ones. Lets face it, Rugrats they ain't.

Does one not find it ironic that the best moment that involves her talent... is likely the only one from an episode without a musical number?

And if you actually showed her singing in that same ep then that would completely defeat the impact of the joke.

But, say that the pageant took place the day before the race, and the prize was singing at the finals the next day. It would kinda enhance the joke to show Susie singing, before cutting to Lil saying something like "I can't believe you're passing up an opportunity to make your point, for the sake of singing!" And Susie would reply, "Well, I'm not passing up another opportunity to get a record deal! FameQuest, anyone?" (okay, the last bit would be optional)

Nah. I think that would just drag the momment of the delivery displaying Susie's vanity instead of hitting the viewers in the face with it.

Part of what made the joke funny was the timing. She changed her view on a drop of a hat despite how determined she was to make a point about the shallowness of the pagent.
